John 1:9-18 GW . . .The real light, which shines on everyone, was coming into the world. (10) He was in the world, and the world came into existence through him. Yet, the world didn't recognize him. (11) He went to his own people, and his own people didn't accept him. (12) However, he gave the right to become God's children to everyone who believed in him. (Gal 3:19-29) (13) These people didn't become God's children in a physical way-from a human impulse or from a husband's desire to have a child. They were born from God. (2 Chron 16:9; John 6:44 of 41-58) (14) The Word became human and lived among us. We saw his glory. It was the glory that the Father shares with his only Son, a glory full of kindness and truth. (15) (John declared the truth about him when he said loudly, "This is the person about whom I said, 'The one who comes after me was before me because he existed before I did.'") (16) Each of us has received one gift after another because of all that the Word is. (17) The Teachings were given through Moses, but kindness and truth came into existence through Jesus Christ. (18) No one has ever seen God. God's only Son, the one who is closest to the Father's heart, has made him known.

John 1:9-18 GNB . . .This was the real light---the light that comes into the world and shines on all people. (10) The Word was in the world, and though God made the world through him, yet the world did not recognize him. (11) He came to his own country, but his own people did not receive him. (12) Some, however, did receive him and believed in him; so he gave them the right to become God's children. (Gal 3:19-29) (13) They did not become God's children by natural means, that is, by being born as the children of a human father; God himself was their Father. (2 Chron 16:9; John 6:44 of 41-58) (14) The Word became a human being and, full of grace and truth, lived among us. We saw his glory, the glory which he received as the Father's only Son. (15) John spoke about him. He cried out, "This is the one I was talking about when I said, 'He comes after me, but he is greater than I am, because he existed before I was born.' " (16) Out of the fullness of his grace he has blessed us all, giving us one blessing after another. (17) God gave the Law through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. (18) No one has ever seen God. The only Son, who is the same as God and is at the Father's side, he has made him known.

John 1:9-18 BBE . . .The true light, which gives light to every man, was then coming into the world. (10) He was in the world, the world which came into being through him, but the world had no knowledge of him. (11) He came to the things which were his and his people did not take him to their hearts. (12) To all those who did so take him, however, he gave the right of becoming children of God--that is, to those who had faith in his name: (Gal 3:19-29) (13) Whose birth was from God and not from blood, or from an impulse of the flesh and man's desire. (2 Chron 16:9; John 6:44 of 41-58) (14) And so the Word became flesh and took a place among us for a time; and we saw his glory--such glory as is given to an only son by his father--saw it to be true and full of grace. (15) John gave witness about him, crying, This is he of whom I said, He who is coming after me is put over me because he was in existence before me. (16) From his full measure we have all been given grace on grace. (17) For the law was given through Moses; grace and the true way of life are ours through Jesus Christ. (18) No man has seen God at any time; the only Son, who is on the breast of the Father, he has made clear what God is.

John 1:9-18 CEV . . .The true light that shines on everyone was coming into the world. (10) The Word was in the world, but no one knew him, though God had made the world with his Word. (11) He came into his own world, but his own nation did not welcome him. (12) Yet some people accepted him and put their faith in him. So he gave them the right to be the children of God. (Gal 3:19-29) (13) They were not God's children by nature or because of any human desires. God himself was the one who made them his children. (2 Chron 16:9; John 6:44 of 41-58) (14) The Word became a human being and lived here with us. We saw his true glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father. From him all the kindness and all the truth of God have come down to us. (15) John spoke about him and shouted, "This is the one I told you would come! He is greater than I am, because he was alive before I was born." (16) Because of all that the Son is, we have been given one blessing after another. (17) The Law was given by Moses, but Jesus Christ brought us undeserved kindness and truth. (18) No one has ever seen God. The only Son, who is truly [like or in the essence of] God and is closest to the Father, has shown us what God is like.

You will note the reference windows often include more than one translation of the Bible. The reason is to strive to gain the best possible understanding of the original Hebrew and Greek. Since we don't speak those languages, we rely on those who have come before and made the effort to translate those texts into English for us. Considering several translations gives the benefit of the understanding of several translation committees or individuals.
