Genesis 4:8-15 ESV Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. (9) Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" He said, "I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?" (10) And the LORD said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground. (11) And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. (12) When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth." (13) Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is greater than I can bear. (14) Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground, and from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me." (15) Then the LORD said to him, "Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold." And the LORD put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him.

Genesis 4:8-15 LITV And Cain talked with his brother Abel. And it happened as they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and killed him. (9) And Jehovah said to Cain, Where is your brother Abel? And he said, I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper? (10) And He said, What have you done? The voice of the blood of your brother cries to Me from the ground. (11) And now you are cursed more than the ground which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. (12) When you till the ground, it will not again give its strength to you. You shall be a vagabond and a fugitive on the earth. (13) And Cain said to Jehovah, My punishment is greater than I can bear. (14) Behold! You have driven me out from the face of the earth today. And I shall be hidden from Your face. And I shall be a vagabond and a fugitive on the earth. And it will be that anyone who finds me shall kill me. (15) And Jehovah said to him, If anyone kills Cain, he shall be avenged sevenfold. And Jehovah set a mark on Cain, so that anyone who found him should not kill him.

Genesis 4:8-15 GNB Then Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out in the fields." When they were out in the fields, Cain turned on his brother and killed him. (9) The LORD asked Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" He answered, "I don't know. Am I supposed to take care of my brother?" (10) Then the LORD said, "Why have you done this terrible thing? Your brother's blood is crying out to me from the ground, like a voice calling for revenge. (11) You are placed under a curse and can no longer farm the soil. It has soaked up your brother's blood as if it had opened its mouth to receive it when you killed him. (12) If you try to grow crops, the soil will not produce anything; you will be a homeless wanderer on the earth." (13) And Cain said to the LORD, "This punishment is too hard for me to bear. (14) You are driving me off the land and away from your presence. I will be a homeless wanderer on the earth, and anyone who finds me will kill me." (15) But the LORD answered, "No. If anyone kills you, seven lives will be taken in revenge." So the LORD put a mark on Cain to warn anyone who met him not to kill him.

Genesis 4:8-15 GW Cain talked to his brother Abel. Later, when they were in the fields, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. (9) The LORD asked Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" "I don't know," he answered. "Am I supposed to take care of my brother?" (10) The LORD asked, "What have you done? Your brother's blood is crying out to me from the ground. (11) So now you are cursed from the ground, which has received the blood of your brother whom you killed. (12) When you farm the ground, it will no longer yield its best for you. You will be a fugitive, a wanderer on the earth." (13) But Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is more than I can stand! (14) You have forced me off this land today. I have to hide from you and become a fugitive, a wanderer on the earth. Now anyone who finds me will kill me!" (15) So the LORD said to him, "Not so! Anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over." The LORD gave Cain a sign so that anyone meeting him would not kill him.

You will note the reference windows often include more than one translation of the Bible. The reason is to strive to gain the best possible understanding of the original Hebrew and Greek. Since we don't speak those languages, we rely on those who have come before and made the effort to translate those texts into English for us. Considering several translations gives the benefit of the understanding of several translation committees or individuals.
